In a summer filled with successes and great stories, our fishing program was a big hit this summer. With the generosity of the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, we were able to purchase five fishing boats with trolling motors and fish finders. This great new equipment was utilized all summer but especially during our Rods-N-Reels Day Camp Program. These campers got a chance to spend to some quality out on the lake with their counselors. These weeks were filled with stories of how “Big Charlie” had just got away and all the huge fish that were landed.
Camp Copneconic went on a wild ride to the Smoky Mountains for the first time this year. After a long voyage down to North Carolina we set up camp and got ready for our first adventure the very next morning. The experience on the Nantahala River was new to everyone due to the duckies (inflatable kayaks) that we were outfitted with. A great outing was capped off with a thrilling ride over Nantahala Falls, a five foot waterfall!

On Saturday, February 19th, 2011, the spirited atmosphere of New Orleans shone upon YMCA Camp Copneconic. The sun had made a rare February appearance and an unseasonable warm front seemed to cheer up all those experiencing Michigan’s harsh winter blues. This set the stage for a wonderful Mardi Gras themed evening at the 2nd Annual Gala Dinner & Auction for the YMCA of Greater Flint.
There are certain places in the world that hold a special place in our hearts. For the many hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of Camp Copneconic over the years, Allen Lodge is that place. Since 3pm on a June 13th in 1929, Allen Lodge has been a place to eat a hot meal, worship, grow, and make new friends. Allen has had a rich history since its completion. It was Copneconic’s dining hall, staff house, program building, and home to the camp office until 1998. One of its most notable features is the incredible fireplaces and chimneys. It is amazing to think how many campers over the years have enjoyed a s’more in Allen.
